Mitchell Johnson grabbed ten wickets as he condemned New Zealand to defeat to help Australia take their third Test series of the summer. Chasing a mammoth 479 to level the series New Zealand could manage just 302 thus slipping to a 177 run defeat.

Martin Guptill (58, 157b, 6x4) and bRENDON McCullum (51, 98b, 1x6, 9x4) showed determination as the duo shelved their aggressive stroke-making instincts. It was evident that the pair was looking to bat out the entire day as they shunned the risky shots before ">Bollinger intervened. McCullum was looking very fluent at the crease when ">Bollinger who was handed the new ball got one to seam just a wee-bit away from the batsman who was forced to play at it and in th end guided it into the hands of Hussey at gully.

That was the opening that the Australians were looking for and with Patel (3, 10b) at the crease Bollinger opted for the short ball which the batsmen fended to third slip. Guptill's patient 58 was ended when Ponting took a sharp catch in the slips and it seemed that the Kiwis might be simply rolled over. But Southee (45, 25b, 1x6, 7x4) had other ideas. The all-rounder had displayed immense batting capability when he first burst on the the scene and he repeated the same he. The all-rounder went after the bowling as he displayed some lusty blows but it only delayed the inevitable.
